Appointment of Pro deo Counsel
Service description
Legal assistance is made available to indigent (poor) appellants in civil cases. In criminal appeals pro-deo counsel is assigned to appellants in murder cases and any other cases which have constitutional connotations.
How do I obtain the service?
In both civil and criminal appeals, you apply to the Registrar for assessment of your status.
How do I apply for this service?
For civil and criminal appeals, you apply to the Registrar pursuant to Rule 30 of the Court of Appeal Rules which requires that the Registrar assess your means. Firstly, the Registrar will course for a certificate of whether or not you have an arguable case to be made by an attorney. If you don’t have an arguable case, you will be denied the service.
